Embrace Change. Live Authentic.

Gender-affirming procedures, also known as gender confirmation procedures or gender reassignment surgeries, are medical interventions that help individuals align their physical characteristics with their gender identity. These procedures aim to alleviate gender dysphoria and improve the overall well-being and quality of life for transgender individuals. It’s important to note that the specific procedures individuals may undergo can vary based on personal preferences, medical considerations, and availability in different regions. Here are some commonly performed gender-affirming procedures for trans women and trans men:

Gender-Affirming Procedures for Trans Women (Assigned male at birth, transitioning to female):

  • Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS): A collection of surgical procedures that modify the facial features to create a more feminine appearance. This can include forehead contouring, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), chin and jawline reduction, and lip augmentation.

  • Breast Augmentation: The surgical placement of breast implants to enhance breast size and shape.

  • Orchiectomy: The removal of the testes, which reduces the production of testosterone and eliminates the need for anti-androgen medications.

  • Vaginoplasty: A surgical procedure to create a neovagina using existing genital tissue or donor tissue. This may involve removal of the penis, reshaping of the scrotal skin into labia, and creating a clitoral structure.

  • Tracheal Shave: Also known as tracheal cartilage reduction, this procedure reduces the prominence of the Adam’s apple to create a more feminine neck appearance.

Gender-Affirming Procedures for Trans Men (Assigned female at birth, transitioning to male):

  • Chest Reconstruction Surgery (Top Surgery): The removal of breast tissue and reshaping of the chest to create a more masculine contour. This can include mastectomy, nipple grafting, and chest masculinization.

  • Metoidioplasty: A procedure that involves releasing and enhancing the clitoris to create a small phallus. It may also involve urethral lengthening to allow for standing urination.

  • Phalloplasty: A surgical technique to construct a neophallus using donor tissue, typically from the forearm or thigh. This procedure may involve multiple stages and can include erectile and testicular implants.

  • Hysterectomy: The removal of the uterus, often performed in preparation for phalloplasty or as a separate procedure to alleviate dysphoria.

  • Testicular Implants: Placement of prosthetic testicles in the scrotum to enhance the appearance and improve body image.

It’s important to note that these procedures come with potential risks and considerations. They often require extensive evaluation, counseling, and coordination with healthcare professionals experienced in transgender healthcare.
